Rods and reels for freshwater and saltwater fishing

The rod and reel form the foundation of any fishing setup. Choose them to suit your technique, the fish you’re targeting, the lures or rigs you use and the conditions you encounter on the water.

Ardent Pêche offers a wide selection of fishing rods and reels for beginners and experienced anglers alike. Whether you fish with lures, target pike, zander, perch, largemouth bass or trout, or enjoy saltwater fishing, surfcasting or fly fishing, each technique calls for suitable gear.

Spinning rods, casting rods and other fishing techniques

Choosing a fishing rod depends above all on the technique you use. Its length, power rating and action directly affect casting distance, accuracy, lure action and the feel of fighting a fish.

Spinning rods are a versatile, accessible option. Paired with a spinning reel, they can be used for many techniques in both freshwater and saltwater.

Casting rods are designed to be paired with baitcasting reels. They are especially popular for lure fishing for predatory fish, particularly when casting accuracy or the use of large lures is important.

You’ll also find rods for more specialized techniques, including:

• Spinning rods for lure fishing
• Casting rods for predatory fish
• Big bait rods for pike
• Surfcasting rods for shore fishing
• Toc and nymphing rods for trout
• Fly rods
• Rods for saltwater fishing techniques

Which reel should you choose for your fishing rod?

Choose a fishing reel that matches the rod and the technique. Its size, retrieval rate, drag and line capacity should suit both the fish you’re targeting and the diameter of the line you use.

Spinning reels

The spinning reel is the most common type. Easy to use and highly versatile, it can be paired with either a light rod for trout or perch or a powerful setup for pike, zander or saltwater fish.

Choosing the right size helps balance the rod-and-reel setup while providing the necessary line capacity and drag power.

Baitcasting reels

A baitcasting reel sits on top of a casting rod. This type of gear is widely used to target predatory fish and provides excellent casting accuracy.

Baitcasting reels are particularly useful for repeated casting, techniques that involve covering water quickly and using medium to heavy lures.

Specialized reels

Some techniques require specialized reels. Fly fishing, toc fishing, surfcasting and certain saltwater techniques all have gear developed for their particular demands.

It’s important to choose a reel based on its intended use rather than its size or appearance alone.

How do you choose a rod-and-reel setup?

Match your gear to the fish you’re targeting

A setup for perch or trout fishing does not face the same demands as gear designed to target large pike or fish in saltwater.

The rod’s power rating and the reel’s size should suit both the fish you’re targeting and the weight of the lures or rigs you use.

Choose a rod to suit your lures

For lure fishing, the power range marked on the rod indicates the weights it can cast effectively.

A light rod will suit small lures, while a more powerful rod is needed for swimbaits, large shads, jerkbaits and other lures used to target larger predatory fish.

Balance your rod and reel

A well-balanced rod-and-reel setup provides greater comfort and accuracy. A reel that is too heavy for a light rod can quickly tire an angler, while an undersized reel may lack power or line capacity.

The aim is to put together a setup that suits your technique and remains comfortable to use for several hours.
