Which Shimano reel to choose?

Rod balance

Choose a reel suited to your rod — one that will balance the rod but also allow you to cast the lures intended for the rod's power rating.

The bearings

For a casting reel, the crucial point is the spool's rotation capacity. The smoother the rotation and the lower the resistance to rotation, the farther you will be able to cast and with lighter lure weights. It is therefore important to look at the number and quality of the bearings in the reel. For a spinning reel, this is also an important point.

The spool diameter

The spool diameter is very important on a spinning reel; it must be in line with the size and position of the rod's first guide ring. The larger the first guide ring, the larger the spool diameter needs to be. The farther the first guide ring is from the reel seat, the larger the reel needs to be.

The gear ratio

Another important point is the retrieve ratio. A standard ratio is 75–80 cm of line retrieved per handle turn. You should therefore choose your reel's ratio based on the fishing techniques you want to use.
