Less well-known than the spinner, the casting spoon is just as effective for predator fishing — pike, perch, zander, wels catfish and many other species. Thanks to its compact profile and erratic action, it often unlocks the score when nothing else seems to work. Perfectly suited to slow or fast prospecting, it works equally well in calm areas and fast currents, in rivers as well as lakes.

Which casting spoon to choose for pike and other predators?

Casting spoons are designed to be fished in linear prospecting, classic retrieval, or simply by working a promising spot with short pulls and releases. Among all the models available, how do you choose the right shape?

Curve and width

The more curved the spoon (S-shape) and the wider it is, the more resistance it will create against the water, producing a wider swimming action. This is ideal for calm areas. Conversely, for areas with current, a spoon with less curve and a narrower profile is preferred.

Thickness and width

The thicker and narrower (in width) the spoon, the less lift it will have in the water, and therefore it will sink more quickly. This is ideal for deep or fast-flowing areas. For shallow or calm areas, opt for a thin and wide version, which has greater lift and therefore sinks more slowly.
