Yamashita Squish: a soft texture when a squid takes it

When a squid takes a lure, the body texture comes into play. Yamashita developed the Squishy Body to reproduce a soft feel, close to that of a baitfish, and encourage the squid to hold on.

Squish 3.8-1: the most compact presentation

The Squish 3.8-1 measures 3.8 cm and has one crown of hooks. It significantly reduces the profile presented on your rig.

This small size is an option when you want to try a more discreet presentation. To compare its effect, first keep the same fishing depth and a similar action.

Squish 5-1: an intermediate size

The Squish 5-1 measures 5 cm and has one crown of hooks. It complements the small model when you want to increase the presented volume without moving straight to the 7 cm size.

Keeping two sizes in your selection allows you to adapt the rig during a trip. A difference in volume can be worth testing before multiplying color changes.

Squish 7-2: a larger profile and two crowns of hooks

The Squish 7-2 measures 7 cm and has two crowns of hooks. It offers a bulkier presentation than the 3.8-1 and 5-1 sizes.

In these names, the number after the hyphen indicates the number of hook crowns. It corresponds neither to weight nor to sink rate.

How do you choose colors for your Yamashita Squish?

Distinguishing the outer fabric from the body

The same range may include several body finishes. The Squish 3.8-1 and 5-1 notably include Keimura, pink or green versions. The 7-2 range also offers Glow and 490 Glow bodies depending on the colour.

Not all Squish therefore have the same luminous effect. Check the specifications of the selected item to identify its exact finish.

Building a selection with different contrasts

To start, choose a few colors that provide distinct presentations: a light shade, a stronger contrast and another body finish, for example.

If bites slow down, change only one element at a time. You will be able to compare results more effectively by keeping your lure size, depth or action unchanged while testing a new color.

How do you incorporate Squish into your boat rig?

Preserving the squid jigs’ freedom of movement

On a dropper rig, space the lures far enough apart to limit tangles. Check their position after lowering and after working them: a squid jig caught in the leader no longer presents its profile correctly.

Choose a rig that is easy to handle. The aim is to be able to follow your lures and reproduce a presentation that works.

Adjusting the weight to the depth and drift

Weighting allows you to reach the desired water layer and keep control of the rig. Its choice depends in particular on depth, current and boat drift.

If you lose your reference points, adjust these settings first. Increasing the size of the Squish does not replace suitable weighting.

Start with a few measured movements, then pause. Gradually vary the rhythm and duration of the pauses to observe the reactions.

When a sequence produces a bite, try to repeat it at the same depth before changing lures. These reference points allow you to fish more methodically.

Staying alert during quiet phases

Watch for small changes in tension: a pull, tremor or unusual slackness may indicate contact. Boat movement can also cause variations; compare them with the usual behaviour of your rig.

A soft body does not remove the need to react to a bite. After setting the hook, maintain steady tension during the retrieve.
