Why grease a reel's gears?

The gears of a spinning or casting reel transmit the retrieve force from the handle to the rotor or spool. Subject to repeated stress, they wear out prematurely if the original grease degrades, dries out or becomes contaminated. An under-lubricated reel produces metallic noises, a jerky retrieve and can, over time, suffer costly gear failures.

Recommended maintenance frequency
