Tips from our team of enthusiasts: Which fishing reel should you choose?

Rod balance

Choose a reel suited to your rod — one that will balance the rod while also allowing you to cast the lures intended for the rod's power rating.

Spool diameter

For a spinning reel, the spool diameter must match the size and positioning of the first guide on the rod. The larger the first guide, the larger the spool diameter should be. The farther the guide is from the reel seat, the larger the reel should be.

The retrieve ratio

Another important point is the retrieve ratio. A standard ratio is 75-80 cm of retrieve per handle turn. You should therefore choose your reel's ratio based on the fishing techniques you wish to use.

If you have any questions about choosing a rod, the appropriate rigs for your fishing area, or the type of line (braid, nylon, fluorocarbon) to put on your reel, don't hesitate to contact us through our website, by phone, or by visiting us in person at our Ardent Pêche store.
