How to choose a spinning reel?

Rod balance

Choose a reel suited to your rod — that is, a reel that will balance the rod but also allow you to cast the lures intended for the rod's power rating.

Spool diameter

For a spinning reel, the spool diameter is an important point — it must be consistent with the size and positioning of the rod's first guide ring. The larger the first guide ring, the larger the spool diameter needs to be. The further the first guide ring is from the reel seat, the larger the reel needs to be.

The gear ratio

Another important point is the gear ratio. A standard ratio is 75-80cm of retrieve per crank handle turn. You will therefore need to choose your reel's ratio based on the fishing techniques you wish to use.
