The Bariki Shad was created to produce significant vibrations regardless of retrieval speed. It is indeed capable of swimming at very low speed as well as at a sustained pace. A vertical slot in the tail fin allows a small-diameter weighted insert to be added to further amplify the vibrations produced by the lure. This slot can also be used for inserting a rattle (bead chamber) to combine a high-frequency sound with the lure's movements. Its dense material containing salt crystals and loaded with attractant makes it a fairly solid lure despite its soft compound. This lure can be used just as well on a jig head as on a 5/0 Texas hook (a ventral slot and a dorsal slot facilitate the mounting of this type of hook). A small extra thickness of material on the back of the lure protects the point of a Texas hook from snags and suspended debris.
