Yamashita Upper: a specific posture for squid fishing

The distinctive feature of Yamashita Upper models is their balance. Their floating body promotes a slightly raised posture on the rig, designed for squid that approach their prey from below.

Designed for ika metal fishing, Upper models provide a presentation that complements the weighted lure placed at the end of the rig. They allow you to vary the silhouette and posture offered on the same line.

A tapered body near the crowns

Yamashita has tapered the rear section of the body near the crowns to improve hooking. Both sizes feature a double-crown hook setup.

How do you rig a Yamashita Upper?

Position the Upper above a weighted sutte

On an ika metal rig, install the Upper on a short dropper above a weighted lure, such as a Yamashita Armer. The latter provides the weight and is also a presentation that squid may take.

Leave enough space between the two lures to reduce tangles. Also check that the connections preserve the Upper's freedom of movement.

Keep the rig easy to follow

Start with a simple setup. You will be able to identify bites more easily, handle your line and return to a productive depth.

If you lose control of the rig while drifting, reassess the weight of the terminal lure before replacing the Upper. A different presentation is only useful if it passes through the target zone.

How do you choose colors for your Upper models?

When building your tackle box, prioritize visually distinct colors. A light shade, strong contrast and a different finish provide several options to compare during a trip.

Alternate movements and pauses

Make short rod movements, then stabilize the rig to let the Upper assume its posture. Gradually vary the duration of pauses and the amplitude of the movements.

Avoid making a series of movements without observing the reactions. A pause also makes it easier to spot an unusual change in tension.

Find the depth where bites occur

After a contact, note the amount of line released and try to repeat the same sequence. A line counter or the markings on multicolored braid can help you return to the productive water layer.

Watch for subtle pulls, rod-tip trembles or slack, while taking the boat's regular movements into account.
