Yamashita Hover: an egi designed for omorig

In omorig, the egi is connected to a relatively long leader, while a separate weight allows you to reach the desired depth. This freedom of movement provides a distinctive presentation, but can also make bites harder to detect when the leader goes slack.

The Yamashita Hover was developed to address this challenge: promoting contact with the lure while maintaining a stable presentation.

Positioned on the back, the Hover Fin uses the current to help tighten the leader after the retrieve. It also helps stabilise the egi's posture.

This design helps with bite detection, but rig control remains essential. Weighting, drift and rod position also influence the sensations transmitted to the angler.

A slow-sinking egi

The Hover 2.5 weighs around 9 g, with a stated sinking speed of around 8 seconds per metre. This indication describes the behaviour of the lure on its own.

On an omorig rig, the separate weight provides most of the descent toward the area being worked. You can therefore adapt the rig's weight to conditions without systematically replacing your egi.

Choose the weight according to conditions

Depth, current, line diameter and boat drift determine the required weight. Look for a weight that lets you follow the rig and retain reliable reference points.

If the line moves away quickly or you can no longer reach the desired depth, review this setting before changing colour. Also consider the total weight used to stay within your rod's casting range.

How should you rig your Yamashita Hover?

Separate the weight from the lure presentation

An omorig rig includes a connection point that separates the weight from the leader carrying the egi. The Hover is positioned at the end of the latter.

Use a rig designed for this technique and check the freedom of movement of its various components. The leader must be able to deploy properly without wrapping around the weight.

Adjust the leader length

A longer length gives the lure more freedom, but also makes handling and detecting contact more demanding. Start with a setup you can cast, sink and work cleanly.

Before changing the length, observe how the rig behaves during pauses. Frequent tangles or difficulty regaining contact indicate that an adjustment should be reviewed.

Compare body finishes

The range includes different finishes depending on the model, including Glow, Keimura, red and purple. The Hover also features a 490 Glow Switch Belly marker on its underside.

Distinguish this marker from the body finish: its presence does not mean the entire lure is glow-in-the-dark. Check the specifications of the selected colour to identify its exact presentation.

Build a selection that is easy to compare

Choose a few complementary colours rather than a succession of similar shades. A light presentation and a darker silhouette already allow you to test different approaches.

When changing colour, first keep the same depth and retrieve. This will help you interpret reactions more effectively while taking boat movement and changing current into account.

How should you work the Hover in omorig?

Regain contact after each movement

Once the water layer has been reached, make a short sequence of movements, then steady your rod. Let the rig deploy and regain readable tension before starting another sequence.

Gradually vary the amplitude of your movements and the duration of pauses. The aim is to retain reference points to identify when a bite occurs.

Observe changes during the pause

A subtle pull, tremor or unusual slackening may signal contact. Compare these changes with the regular movements caused by the boat.

After a bite, note the depth and rhythm used. Repeating a productive sequence will help you work the area more methodically than constantly changing tackle.
